The Green Party increases vote share by 3.7% to 11.5%

24 May 2023

The dust has finally settled after Medway went to the polling stations in early May.

So what happended?

Medway Green Party candidates received an impressive 7741 votes across Medway wards, equating to a total vote share of 11.5% - and increase of 3.7%.

How close did we come?

We were just 45 votes short of winning our first seat on Medway Council. Matt Nightingale is a fantastic local candidate and backed by Cat Jamieson the team took 31.9% of the vote share. Our eyes are firmly set on achieving these 2 seats in the 2027 local elections.

How has Medway Changed as a result of these elections?

Yes, The Conservative Party has lost overall control of Medway Council, securing just 22 seats across Medway the over all control of the council now falls to The Labour Party. It is the first time in Medway Council's history that The Conservative Party are not in control, a reflection of the wider disappointment some might say disgust at the behaviour being perpetuated at Government level.

Surely 7741 votes should mean that The Green Party should be represented on Medway Council?

Yes you would think so, but as Medway Council practices a First Past the Post voting system; we as a party and you as a voter are left at a loss. An example of how unfair the current system is, can be seen quite simply by looking to the ward of Hoo St Werburgh & High Halstow.  Three independent candidates received 3 council seats with a total of 6897 votes, 844 votes less than achieved by Medway Green Party. We will as always continue to push for a Proportional Representative system to be adopted both locally & nationally.

What about High Halstow Parish Council?

Marilyn Stone, a member of our Coordinator's Team was re-elected to sit on High Halstow Parish Council with 400 votes. She is the only member of the Parish Council to sit under the banner of a political party, and has been extremely hands on in the community helping to formulate the High Halstow Neighbourhood Plan alongside our Planning Advisor Bernard Hyde.
