Medway welcomes controversial Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Dr Rupert Read.

“How do we respond politically, individually, philosophically and psychologically to looming climate & ecological collapse? Is our civilisation ending?“

On Friday 8th November 2019 multiple political parties will join together in listening to Dr Rupert Read delivering his talk “Climate & Ecological Collapse?”

The Green Party, the Conservative Party, the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats and Independents will then join audience members in a Q&A session with the opportunity to challenge Rupert’s perspective on this world changing subject.  We will then hear from Medway Council’s Climate Committee on what they are doing to mitigate against the realities of climate change.

After a short comfort break we will then hear from Medway Youth Climate Change Movement and Towards a Plastic Free Medway about what you can do to help make Medway Greener.

Talk Synopsis:
The actions of movements like the school strikes and Extinction Rebellion have been successful in drawing massive, unprecedented public attention to the climate and ecological emergencies.  But an even more devastating honesty is required, in conveying the truth about - our dire environmental predicament, raising further questions about how we ought to respond to the very real probability of ecological collapse within many of our lifetimes. Such honesty is Rupert Read’s trademark. In this talk Rupert will question how we ought to respond politically, individually, philosophically and psychologically to the knowledge that our civilisation is ending, and to the slight but wonderful prospect of that ending coming without a collapse-event.  Rupert will reflect upon the lessons learnt from October’s [Extinction] Rebellion and our society's future prospects.

Tickets are £3 per person (this fee covers venue & marketing costs.  Dr Read is receiving no fee for his talk or attendance).
Tickets can be booked online:

Who is Rupert Read?
Rupert has recently been in the spotlight as a spokesperson for XR during this month’s Rebellion which has seen over 1400 people arrested in the process of peaceful, non-violent civil disobedience.  The movement has drawn both positive and negative responses from the general public, parliament & industry.  But one thing is undeniable we are now talking about climate change as a serious threat and we must Act Now.  Rupert is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia.  He has been a councillor for The Green Party and an MEP candidate.  He has most recently been interviewed by BBC Radio 4 and a panels guest on Politics Live & Question Time.
